NGOs raise concerns ahead of World Forestry Conference | News Article

Durban - With just days to go before the 14th World Forestry Congress gets underway in Durban from September 7 to 11, NGOs are already taking advantage of the international platform to raise concerns around the global forestry industry.

The Global Forest Coalition has brought together almost 80 indigenous peoples' organisations and NGOs from 50 different countries. They are in Durban to promote respect for the rights of indigenous people, local communities and women.

The coalition's Simone Lovera says the biggest threat facing communities globally is plantations that take up huge amounts of land but provide few jobs and are harmful to biodiversity.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries meanwhile says this is the first time the congress, which takes place every six years, will be hosted on African soil.  The theme this year is “Forests and People: Investing in a Sustainable Future”, and according to the DAFF is a significant gathering of the world’s forestry sector that will provide a platform to deliberate critical issues the forestry.
