Agriculture jobs not only on the farm─── SABRINA DEAN 15:34 Fri, 18 Sep 2015
Bloemfontein - Opportunities are there for the taking for those who want to get involved in agriculture, particularly among the scarce and critical skills requirements.
This is according to Caren Cleinwerck of AgriSETA, which is one of the exhibitors at the Agri Workshops and Publications event in Bloemfontein. She says a job in the agriculture sector does not necessarily mean you will be out in the field:
"The agriculture sector is vast. People may think it is only for people working on farms, but in reality we need our agricultural economists, we need our accountants in the sector, we need our refrigeration mechanics, for example.
"Everything these days is going digital, so that's why we say we need people in the ICT sector as well, specifically in agriculture. Nowadays you can be based in an office but remote controlling a tractor which is operating outside."

Organiser of the agricultural event, Tsholo Mokobe, says the numerous exhibitors and workshops have been tailored to cater specifically to emerging African farmers. Two side-by-side workshops are presented three times daily, with presenters ranging from the Independent Development Corporation and the Agricultural Research Council to the likes of Pannar and Omnia.
The Agri Workshops and Publication event is on at the Bloemfontein showgrounds today and tomorrow. Entrance is free of charge.
