Bloemfontein - Farmers are again being urged to report stock theft to ensure that the data collected by the SA Police Service accurately reflects the reality of the situation.

This is the call from Free State Agriculture following the release this week of the national crime statistics.

FSA’s Tommy Esterhuyse says the organisation is currently conducting its own investigation to determine the current state of affairs, as well as the reasons why stock farmers are not reporting stock theft:

“It is really very important for stock theft cases to be reported at all times because this determines the structures needed by the police to investigate the problem.

“We at Free State Agriculture are currently busy with an investigation into the reasons why stock theft is not being reported. We will definitely keep our members up to date and we also regularly make requests during meetings that all stock theft must be reported.”

The organisation has also highlighted that the statistical drop in stock theft may have other inaccuracies, saying the minister does not supply any information on the amount of stock being stolen. FSA said in a statement one example of this is a tendency where there are fewer incidents, but larger numbers of stock being stolen during these incidents.
