FS roads for travellers - a breakdown of roadworks, general conditions─── 15:05 Fri, 12 Dec 2014
Bloemfontein - Holiday-makers passing through the Free State during the Festive Season are hereby made aware of the general condition of our province’s roads.
Southern Free State
• N1: Bloemfontein to Colesberg: Roadworks about 40km from Bloemfontein near Tierpoort but no stop-and-go in place.
• N6 from Bloemfontein to Aliwal North is in a good condition.
• Bloemfontein – Dewetsdorp: last 20km is in bad condition but the rest is in good condition.
• Dewetsdorp to Wepener: First 10km towards Wepener is in a poor condition but the rest of the way is in fair condition.
• Wepener to Zastron is still under construction with 30 km completed and open for traffic. STOP/GO principle applies.
• Kroonstad – Vredefort is under construction and has two sets of stop and go.
• Vredefort to Parys is in bad condition and has developed a lot of potholes. Currently regular general maintenance taking place.
• Vredefort – Potchefstroom intersection towards Viljoenskroon is in a good condition.
• Kroonvaal to Heilbron is in good condition (R723)
• Heilbron to Frankfort is in good condition (R34)
• Deneysville – Sasolburg still under construction with detour roads but 6km opened for traffic.
• N5 to the border with KwaZulu-Natal is in very poor condition and should be avoided.
• The Bergville road (R74) is still in a very bad condition for the section under traffic control.
• N8 East Bloemfontein via Botshabelo is under construction but no stop-and-go.
• Bloemfontein to Dealesville is in good condition.
• Dealesville to Boshof is in a very poor condition with numerous potholes.
• Bultfontein to Wesselsbron is in poor condition but we have a small contractor doing temporary pothole repairs.
• Wesselsbron – Bothaville is in poor condition. A small contractor busy with pothole repairs.
• Bothaville to Orkney is still in fair condition and is ‘driveable’.
• Clocolan to Ficksburg is in good condition.
• Ficksburg to Fouriesburg is in poor condition with many potholes. A small contractor is currently filling up the potholes.

• Bloemfontein to Bultfontein is still in good condition.• Bultfontein to Wesselsbron is in poor condition but we have a small contractor doing temporary pothole repairs.
• Wesselsbron – Bothaville is in poor condition. A small contractor busy with pothole repairs.
• Bothaville to Orkney is still in fair condition and is ‘driveable’.
Eastern Free State
• N5 Winburg to Bethlehem/Harrismith: Road in good condition but road works between Winburg and Senekal. Stop/Go principle may apply.
• Botshabelo to Ladybrand is in good condition
• Ladybrand to Clocolan has potholes but all continuously monitored and attended to.• Clocolan to Ficksburg is in good condition.
• Ficksburg to Fouriesburg is in poor condition with many potholes. A small contractor is currently filling up the potholes.
• The roads between Fouriesburg – Clarens – Golden Gate and Phuthaditjhaba are in a good condition.
