Bloemfontein - Veteran lock, Victor Matfield, has been ruled out of the Springboks test in the opening round of the Rugby Championship.
Matfield, who this year returned to international duty after coming out of retirement, will miss the match against Argentina at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria due to a knee injury.
Matfield sustained a small tear in his knee cartridge and the Springbok team doctor, Craig Roberts said he will be treated conservatively over the next few days.
A decision on his future involvement in the tournament will be made later in the week.
Meanwhile, the Boks have released Western Province duo, Eben Etzebeth and Frans Malherbe to play in the Currie Cup.
They will both be in action for the side when they tackle the EP Kings in the tournament opener at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday.
