Tuks crowned as Young Guns champions | News Article

The University of the Pretoria Tuks Under-20 rugby team were crowned as the new Varsity Cup Young Guns champions last night.

The men from the capital city beat the University of the Free State Kovies 26-13 in Bloemfontein to win their third title in the competition.

The Pretoria side got their revenge after losing last year’s final to André Tredoux’s boys with an impressive all-round performance on both attack and defence.

Juandre Swanepoel, Johannes Meintjies and Xander van Wyk all scored tries for the visitors, while Arrie Pretorius and Nardus Erasmus crossed the white-wash for the 2014 champions.

Following the match, Kovies captain Andries Kriek said mistakes cost them in the final, but the team has cemented a brotherhood they will have forever.

In Johannesburg, the University of KwaZulu-Natal Impi beat Wits 29-24 to win the Varsity Shield for the first time.

Next week Monday at 19:00, the Shimlas host the North West University Pukke at Shimla Park in the Varsity Cup final.
