The Cheetahs outgun the Force in Perth | News Article

The Toyota Cheetahs have picked up their third win of the Super Rugby this year when they beat the Western Force 24-15 in Perth, for their first win since week three of the competition.

The Cheetahs struck first in the match when winger Raymond Rhule went over for a try in the 6th minute.

Nine minutes later, the Western Force who were celebrating their 10th anniversary as a Super Rugby franchise, took the lead when Luke Morahan crossed the white-wash for a try, which centre Luke Burton converted.

Joe Pietersen and Burton each chased a penalty through the uprights to hand the home side a narrow 10-8 lead at the half-time break.

Michael Foley’s men got their second stanza off to a perfect start, when flanker Chris Alcock scored the Forces’ second try following a solid lineout drive.

The Cheetahs scrum and defence was at its’ best it’s been since week three of the competition when they beat the Blues in Bloemfontein, and this shut the Force out of the game, with Alcocks’ try being their last score of the match.

Another penalty and drop goal via the educated boot of Joe Pietersen saw Naka Drotské’s men sneak to within one of the Force with more than half an hour remaining on the clock.

The Cheetahs shifted gears especially in the setpiece and on attack, and started capitalising on the mistakes made by the Force which was brought on by relentless pressure.

Springbok flank Heinrich Brüssow scored the sides’ second try after the strong lineout drive by the forwards and handed the Cheetahs the lead again for the first time since the 15th minute of the match.

With four minutes left on the clock, Brüssow called for Pietersen to added three more with the boot, and Pietersen duly replied to give the side and nine point cushion and secure their only victory on tour.

The Cheetahs return home now after a gruelling month abroad which saw loses to the Crusaders, Chiefs and the Brumbies.

After five straight loses, the four point against the Force will be a welcome relief, while for the Force it's back to the drawing board before facing the charged up Stormers next weekend. The Force now have just one win from eight games.

The Cheetahs tackle the bottom-of-the-log Reds at the Free State Stadium next week.

Earlier today, the Stormers also returned to winning ways following three losses on the trot, with a brilliant 32-18 win over the Waratahs in Sydney.
