Shimlas crowned Varsity Cup Champions | News Article
The University of the Free State Shimlas have been crowned as the 2015 Varsity Cup Champions after thumping bitter-rivals, North West University Pukke 63-33 in last night’s final.

The Shimlas capped of a perfect unbeaten campaign in front of approximately 12 000 fans at Shimla Park last night by crossing the white wash on 9 occasions.

The new champions played catch-up rugby for most of the first half but took the lead in the 34th minute and never
really looked back.

At 42-25 and with a converted try counting 8 points, it was still anybody’s game, but three tries in the space of 5 minutes for Shimlas properly put the game out of reach of the three-time finalists with 7 minutes remaining on the clock.

Daniel Maartens, Mhaputhu Dolo and Nico Lee all scored a brace for Franco Smith’s side, while Johan van der Hooght, Niell Jordaan and the Player that Rocks, Niel Marais eached scored one try.

Marais told OFM Sport that the opening exchanges were incredibly physical, but the game got enjoyable at one stage.
The next the Varsity Cup Dream Team, coached by Franco Smith will tackle the Springboks U20 team in Stellenbosch.
