Springbok and Stormers flank, Schalk Burger has won the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award in Shanghai, China.
The unmistakable blonde haired loose forward received the award after batting for his life and returned to the sport to win his place back in the Springboks rugby team.
Burger had a cyst next to his spinal cord and went into hospital for treatment, but developed life-threatening meningitis and was taken to intensive care.
The player was named as the Man of the Match in November last year during the Springboks win over England at Twickenham, with Burgers’ try being the deceive score.
Speaking from Shnaghai, Burger said his illness put his live in perspective, although rugby is still very important.
Men’s tennis world number one Novak Djokovic was named as the Sportsman of the year, while Ethiopian middle distance star, Genzebe Dibaba was named as the Sportswoman of the Year.
