Smith offered FS Cheetahs Currie Cup job | News Article

Former Free State, Griquas and Springbok flyhalf, Franco Smith has been offered the head coaching role of the Toyota Free State Cheetahs for the Currie Cup later this year.

According to the Volksblad, the Varsity Cup winner Shimlas coach was offered the role and should he accepted he will take over from Rory Duncan who is the unions Director of Rugby and current Vodacom Cup coach.

The 42-year-old Smith was the Currie Cup team's backline coach last year with currently in Stellenbosch where he is preparing the Varsity Cup Dream Team to tackle the Springbok Under 20’s this evening in Coetzenburg.

Meanwhile…The Cheetahs Super Rugby team's injury woes have deepened with the news that Springbok fullback, Willie le Roux has been sidelined for five weeks with an ankle injury.

Le Roux, sat out last week’s 18-17 loss to the Reds due to SARU resting requirements

The latest injury news comes after flank Heinrich Brüssow broke his arm against the Reds, and Coenie van Wyk, who replaced Le Roux for the match, fractured his ankle.

Brüssow underwent surgery to his arm and will be out of action for three months.

The side tackle the in-form and confident Lions on Saturday, and captain Francois Uys said the side wants to improve on their intensity when they take on Johan Ackerman's’ chargers.

Saturday’s match at the Emirates Airlines Park kicks off at 17:05.
