Coenie becomes a Shark | News Article

Springbok and Toyota Cheetahs prop, Coenie Oosthuizen will be swopping his white-and-orange jersey for a black-and-white one.

The powerful front-rower has signed a four-deal to make Durban his new home after from 1 November.

This has put end to speculation that Oosthuizen would be leaving the Cheetahs to replace fellow Springbok Jannie du Plessis at the franchise.

Oosthuizen told OFM Sport that he is excited about playing for the Sharks and he feels it’s the right move.

“I’m very excited to be going to the Sharks. It’s a new prospect, new opportunity and new challenge for the upcoming year.

“It’s a new stepping stone, I think in your career you need to step on stones to get to the next level where you want to be.

“I think the Sharks is that next level.

It’s unlikely that Oosthuizen will be named in the Springbok squad tomorrow for the match against the World XV, Rugby Championship and the addition test against Argentina due to just having undergone surgery to his back.

He added that with hard work he will be ready for the Rugby World Cup in September and October in England.

“I’ve just come out of surgery and everything is good well, I will most probably be ready for the World Cup.

“But there’s some hard training coming up for me, I’ve just got to do the hard yards to reap the reward at the end of the day.

While, players' Super Rugby days are done in Bloemfontein for the foreseeable future, their is still a possibility that he could be playing Currie Cup rugby for the Cheetahs in order to get some game time ahead of the sports flagship event.

The players teammates at the Cheetahs, Joe Pietersen and Willie le Roux has also signed for the Durban side, while his former teammate, eighth-man Philip van der Walt is also heading to the east coast.

Oosthuizen has played 74 Super Rugby matches for the Cheetahs and has 21 Springbok caps to his name.
