22 000 Expected at Markötter | News Article

Twenty-two thousand people are expected to attend Saturday’s big interschools between Paul Roos Gymnasium and Grey College in Stellenbosch.

The rivalry between the two rugby factories dates back to 1967, however the annual derby only started in 1988, with it becoming a full interschool’s in 1992.

The 45-bus Grey convoy departed from Bloemfontein at 5am this morning ahead to the sporting and cultural events which start tomorrow.

While the rugby always dominates the talk of the town, tomorrow’s hockey will also be a big attraction.

The two powerhouse have met on 31 occasions with Grey tipping the scales heavily in their favour with 23 victories. The Stellenbosch side's last win in the fixture came in 2009 with a 9-3 victory at home.

Paul Roos is currently the leading school in South Africa when it comes to producing Springboks with 51 of which 48 are capped with the Sharks bound Toyota Cheetahs fullback Willie le Roux being the latest by the school.

Grey in their turn have produced 44 fully capped Boks with Sharks scrumhalf Cobus Reinach they most recent old boy to don the green-and-gold.

Former Springbok prop, Hempies du Toit told OFM Sport Saturday’s fixture is expected to be a humdinger with Grey losing three games on the trot earlier in the season and Paul Roos losing to bitter-rivals Boland Landbou over the weekend.

“I think it’s going to be incredible at Markötter, the match between Paul Roos and Grey College is second to none every year.

“It’s the highlight of the schools rugby calendar every year.

“It’s going to be a very interesting game, Paul Roos kicked off their season well with a good tournament win in Japan.

“They returned and picked up a few losses, this past Saturday they lost the Boland Landbou.

“Both teams have something to prove and I believe they will with their best rugby come Saturday.

The infamous Grey three-in-a-row this year came with defeats at the hands of Hoërskool Monument, Paarl Boys' High (Boishaai) and Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies). The Maroon Machine's only two other losses came against the two Paarl powerhouses, Paarl Gymnasium and Paarl Boys' High.

Last year’s match saw Grey claim a hard fought 25-20 victory in Bloemfontein.

Saturday’s match in the shadows of Stellenbosch Mountain kicks off at 14:00.
