Free State edge Province in Bloemfontein | News Article

The Toyota Free State Cheetahs claimed their second win of the Currie Cup season last night when they beat the defending champions, Western Province 28-21 in Bloemfontein.

The home side started like a house on fire and raced to a 25-3 lead after 25 minutes following tries by Neill Jordaan, Henco Venter and Rayno Benjamin.

The rest of the first half belonged to Western Province with Seabelo Senatla and Rynhardt Elstadt each dotting down for the visitors.

The second half was a much tighter affair with the only points scored in the second stanza coming via the boot of Sias Ebersohn for the Cheetahs and Kurt Coleman of Province.

The defeat spelt a second consecutive loss for John Dobson’s side, while for the Cheetahs it’s their second consecutive win which takes them up to fourth on the log for the time being.

Cheetahs captain Francois told OFM Sport that with a little more patience they could have gotten a bonus point win.

“You’re 100% spot on, it’s exactly what we talked about after we got the congratulations out of the way.

“We want to grow as a team, we need to identify good opportunities and capitalise on them.

“But we will keep on learning as we go along and if we pick up good wins along the way, it will be all the better.”

Western Province coach, John Donson said his team performed much better than the previous week, but there is still a lot of soul-searching to be done.

I was a bit happier with certain aspects this week, but you cannot lose games like this at Western Province, so we certainly have to fix things.

“Last week (against the Bulls) we were bullied a bit and outplayed, but this time we shot ourselves in the foot, so we certainly have some soul-searching to do from a results point of view.”

Free State has also received a welcome boost with Springbok flank Oupa Mohoje and winger Cornal Hendricks returning from the national setup for the remainder of the Currie Cup.

This afternoon at 15:00 the Griquas are at home to the Blue Bulls, while at 17:05 the EP Kings host the Sharks.
