McIlroy and Lowrey on fire in Dubai | News Article

World number one, Rory McIlroy was on fire during the opening round of the European Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai yesterday.

The 25-year-old Norther Irishman fired six birdies in a bogey-free round of six under par 66 sto share the lead with Irelands’ Shane Lowrey.

McIlroy showed no signs of rust after taking a six-week break in order to rest and settle of legal and personal affairs.

Following the round, McIlroy said he was just excited to get back onto the course and was well pleased with his round.

"Probably should have been five (birdies) in the first five, to be honest. It was a great way to start.

"You never expect to start like that, but I've been hitting the ball well for the last couple of weeks that I've been practicing and it was just a matter of trying to take that good range play on to the course, and I was able to do that today," said McIlroy.

Meanwhile, Lowrey who is ranked 52nd in the world feels he put himself in contention after his opening round.

"Obviously, I put myself into contention which is a positive from last week. I'm just looking to give myself the same chance this week and maybe I won't mess it up."
Defending champion and world number four Henrik Stenson opened with a four-under par 68 and was in tied fifth.

Louis Oosthuizen is the leading South African in the field with an opening round of three under par 69 and is currently tied in seventh.
