Bafana bundled out of COSAFA Cup─── 08:54 Mon, 25 May 2015
Bafana Bafana has been bundled out of the COSAFA Cup after losing to Botswana 7-6 on penalties in Rustenburg.
Shakes Mashabas’ sides’ shock exit comes after the team played to a goalless draw against the Zebras in regulation time at the Moruleng Stadium.
Throughout the match chances were few and far between, however Platinum Stars man Tlou Segolela provided his home fans with some entertainment in the opening exchanges.
The deceive moment on the match came when Kwanda Mngonyama spot kick hit woodwork after fooling the Botswanan keeper into diving in the wrong direction.
The result sees Botswana advance to the semi-finals along with Namibia who knocked the defending champions, Zambia out of the Southern Africa football showpiece.
Following the match, coach Mashaba said he was happy with the teams' performance despite being sent packing.
"We had an avalanche of chances to score goals but unfortunately we couldn't hit the net but I think our boys did very well and I'd like to say congratulations to Botswana, they knew when it gets to the penalty shootout, it's everyone's game," said Mashaba.
Namibia beat Zambia 5-4 on penalties after their match also finished in a goalless stalemate.
Today’s two quarter-finals will see Ghana put themselves against Madagascar and Mozambique face Malawi.
