Historical Events:

• 1931: Derek Lyle Keys, SA minister of finance from 1992Oct. 1994, is born in Johannesburg.
• 1947: Dean Tshenuwani Simon Farisane, pastor, co-translator of the Venda Bible, ANC politician and current MEC for Transport, Limpopo Provincial Government, is born in Louis Trichardt, (now Makhado), Limpopo.
• 1976: About 600 students from five secondary schools march to Bontheuwel. On their way they are confronted by four riot squad vans. The students are peppered with tear gas and hide in a nearby house. The police flushed the backyard with tear gas to prevent exit.
• 1990: The SA government grants temporary reprieve to Chris Hani, chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe.
• 2004: Mark Thatcher's wife, Diane, and their two children leave SA for the United States.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1919: Ernst Toller's "Die Wandlung" premieres in Berlin.
• 1944: Philip Yordan's "Anna Lucasta" premieres in NYC.
• 1882: The London Times, a British newspaper based in London, publishes an article paying tribute to King Sekhukhune of the Marota Empire.
• 1984: Emmy News & Documentaries Award presentation.

Sports:

• 1939: NY Yankee Atley Donald pitches a baseball a record 94.7 mph (152 kph).
• 1998: Keith Oxlee (63), Springbok rugby fly half, dies in Durban.
• 1965: Casey Stengel announces his retirement after 55 years in baseball.
• 1979: Kathy Horvath (14y5d) is youngest to play in US Tennis Open, she loses.
