Mashinini's IEC appointment draws huge criticism─── 15:54 Wed, 04 Mar 2015
Bloemfontein - Opposition parties in the National Assembly are up in arms over the appointment of Vuma Mashinini, as the new chairperson of the electoral commission.
Mashinini is replacing Pansy Tlhakula, who stepped down last year after a marathon battle to clear her name over a lease deal.
Using its majority in parliament, the ANC managed to get the appointment through. Mashinini was previously president Jacob Zuma's adviser.
Opposition parties have described his appointment as purely political. The DA's Hannif Hoosen says they are dismayed.
It's still unclear when Mashinini will resume his duties.
