The French Open saw no major surprises on the first day of play with the years’ second Grand Slam now underway.

After a good start at Roland Garros in Paris, the 2014 runner-up, Simona Halep of Romania was made to work hard to advance to the second round with 7-5, 6-4 win over Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina.
 
Ana Ivanovic of Serbia needed three sets to dispatch Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova while Russian 9th seed Ekaterina Makrova beat the USA’s Louisa Chirico 6-4, 6-2. 
 
In the men’s draw Japan’s Kei Nishikori beat France’s Paul-Henri Mathieu in straight-sets.
 
2014 Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka beat Turkeys’ Marcel Ilhan 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 and Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga dispatched Sweden's Christian Lindell 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.
 
Seventeen-time Grand Slam Champion Roger Federer of Switzerland said he was happy with his start on clay after beating Columbia’s Alsejando Falla 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4.
 
World number one Novak Djokovic faces Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen today, while the King of Clay Rafael Nadal takes on France’s Quentin Halys.
 
South Africa’s Kevin Anderson will be up against Tim Smyczek of the USA.
