Bouchard and Dimitrov out | News Article

Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard became the first major upset of the 2015 French Open, with the 6th seed falling to Kristina Mladenovic of France in straight sets.

On Monday, seven-time Grand Slam champions Venus Williams was knocked out by her American compatriot, Sloane Stephens, however the result was hardly surprising.

Mladenovic beat Bouchard 6-4, 6-4 to secure her passage through to the second round.

At the post match interview, Bouchard said she felt good going into the match.

"I honestly don't know what to say, I expected a good season, better than last year. This was the same as I have been feeling recently on court - just not like myself.

"I couldn't be as relaxed on court as I wanted to be. I definitely felt a bit better in Rome. That just makes it more disappointing to have a performance like this one.

"It's unfortunate. But I'm sure one day it will stop. It's important to try to move on quickly. In tennis, every Monday is a new chance.

"At the same time, it's just a tennis match and I needn't worry too much. Everyone has highs and lows in their career. I have to be patient."

World number one, Serna Williams in her turn made a low-key start with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic.

In the men’s draw, the King of Clay Rafael Nadal got his campaign underway for a record tenth Roland Garros title with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4 win over France’s Quentin Hayles.

World number one, Novak Djokovic was made to sweat in the second set of his 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 win over Jarkko Niemenen of Finland, and South Africa’s Kevin Anderson got off to a strong start with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory of  the USA’s Tim Smyczek.

Grigor Dimitrow of Bulgaria became the first big upset in the men’s singles with the 10th player being knocked out straight sets by Jack Sock of the USA.
