Halep stunned at Roland Garros | News Article

The French Open saw another major shock yesterday during round two of the years second Grand Slam with last years’ women’s single finalist, Simona Halep of Romania being knocked out.

The Romanian pocket-rocket was found wanting during her match against Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

The unseeded Croatian knocked out the third seeded Halep with a 7-5, 6-1 win.

Offering no excuses for her exit Halep revealed that the medical assistance she needed on court was due to a blister.

"I had a blister. It's not that dangerous," she said.

"It's not about the pressure. Just, I couldn't feel the game. I didn't feel the ball or the game 100%," she said about the loss.

Defending champion, Maria Sharapova of Russia seems to have recovered from her bout of flu to advance to the third round with a straights sets victory over her compatriot Vitalia Diatchenko, while Ana Ivanovic needed three sets to dispatch Japan’s Misaki Doi.

In the men’s draw, Japan’s Kei Nishikori beat Brazil’s Thomaz Belluci 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 and Stan Wawrinka needed four sets to knocked out Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic.

Seventeen-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer made fairly light work of beating Spain’s Marcel Granollers 6-2, 7-6, 6-3, but feels he started badly in the third set.

"I think things went well for me for the first couple of sets. I think I was in control. Even though I was down a break in the second set, I still felt the match was in my racquet. And when you feel that way, obviously you're always going to feel more confident," said the the FedExpress.

"But the thing you don't want to do is to start off sets badly, and that's what happened in the beginning of the third. But after that, I must say, it was probably my best spell of the match right after that. I did get a bit angry with myself, because it was really just such a bad game. But in the end I was able to play with variation today. I was offensive. I was successful at the net," Federer added.

Today the King of Clay Rafael Nadal comes up against this countryman, Nicolas Almagro. Britain’s Andy Murray faces Portugal's Joao Sousa.

World number one Novak Djokovic takes on Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller and South Africa’s Kevin Anderson faces Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu.
