• 1967: Jimi Hendrix quits as opening act of the Monkees' tour.
• 1969: Aretha Franklin arrested for disturbing the peace in Detroit.
• 1945: Samuel Edward Krune Mqhayi, Xhosa poet and prose writer, dies near King William's Town. His first collection of poems, Imihobe nemiBongo (1927) included 'Nkosi sikelel' iAfrica.
• 1988: The Sowetan reports that the Soweto home of Winnie Mandela was burned down allegedly by a group of school children, after an attack of members of the football club on a Sowetan schoolgirl.
