• 1966: Beatles arrive in New York City.

• 1762: First female (Ann Franklin) US newspaper editor, Newport RI, Mercury.
• 1874: Theophil Otto Frederick Charles (Theo) Wendt, composer and conductor of the SABC orchestra, is born in Sydenham, London.
• 1909: Pierre Stephanus de Wet, SA actor, producer and pioneer of Afrikaans sound films, is born in Pretoria. African Film Productions produced several films under his direction.
• 1938: Ephraim Mojalefa (Kid) Ngatane, artist teacher, musician and boxer, is born in Maseru, Lesotho.
 
Sports:
 
• 1945: England defeat Aust Services by 6 wkts in 5th Victory Test Cricket
• 1955: The SA rugby team beats the British Isles 25-9 in Newlands, Cape Town.
• 1972: Rhodesia is asked to withdraw from the 20th Olympic summer games because of its racial policies.
