• 1989: The Citizen reports that a serious shortage of trained intensive care nurses has plunged the country's famous heart transplant unit at Groote Schuur into crisis.
• 2004: Mark Thatcher, SA business man and son of Margaret Thatcher, is arrested by the Scorpions on the suspicion of providing about $275 000 (R1.8m) to finance a botched coup in Equatorial Guinea. He professes his innocence and is freed later during the day on R2 million bail.
