• 1997: Lady Diana Spencer, the former wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, is killed with her companion Dodi Fayed in a car accident in Paris. Her funeral was broadcasted in SA by the SABC.

• 1998: Prof. Gerhard Johannes Beukes, Afrikaans expert in literature and dramatist, dies in Bloemfontein.
• 1968: Private Eye magazine reports a John Lennon & Yoko Ono album will have a picture of them nude on cover.
• 1976: George Harrison found guilty of plagiarising "My Sweet Lord".
