• 1878: 1st female telephone operator starts work (Emma Nutt in Boston).
• 2012: National Day of Libya.
• 1986: QwaQwa: Labour Regulations Repeal Act No 7 commences.
• 1995: Casual Day. Casual Day, started in 1995, is a fundraising project benefiting persons with disabilities. Everybody is called upon to dress differently on the first Friday of September.
 
Arts, Music, TV:
 
• 1952: Nakedi Mathews Phosa, former premier of Mpumalanga and Afrikaans poet, is born in Mbombela township, Nelspruit.
• 1998: Heine Toerien (71), Afrikaans broadcaster and author of entertainment programs, dies in Johannesburg.
• 1997: Cartoon Channel premieres in Japan
• 2005: 22nd MTV Awards: Green Day, Kelly Clarkson & Kanye West wins.

• 1928: The SA rugby team loses the match in Newlands 5-13 against New Zealand, but shares the series 2-2.
• 1998: Silas Nkanunu is elected as new president of the SA Rugby Football Union.
• 2000: Dingaan Thobela, SA boxing champion, wins the middleweight world champion title of the World Boxing Council (WBC).
• 1991: Hiromi Taniguchi wins 3rd world championship marathon (2:14:57).
