• 1956: Dr Sidney Read Welsch (85), researcher on SA explorers, dies in Cape Town.
• 1977: The Bophuthatswana electoral office publishes the results of the general election giving Chief Lucas Mangope's Democratic Party a landslide victory over the opposition Seoposengwe Party.
• 1960: The first election of the Parliament of the Central Tibetan Administration, in history of Tibet. The Tibetan community observes this date as the Democracy Day.
• 1969: The first automatic teller machine in the United States is installed in Rockville Center, New York.

• 1932: David Phaswane Mogano, SA artist, is born in Pietersburg (Polokwane), Northern Transvaal (Limpopo).
• 1946: Ramola Makan, freelance consultant, writer of several cookery books and recipient of inter alia the Silwood Kitchen Honorary Grande Award (1988) is born in Cape Town. She is an authority on alternative health care and slimming.
• 1952: Regardt van den Bergh, SA actor and director, is born.
• 1997: Howard Stern Radio Show premieres in Toronto Canada on CILQ 107.1 FM.
Sports:
• 1982: Tinashe Washington Nengomasha, Zimbabwean international football player who played for Kaizer Chiefs and was winner of the Kick Off Magazine Soccer Player of the Season, 03/04 awards, is born in Harare, Zimbabwe.
• 1989: The SA rugby team beats the World-15 team 22-16 in Johannesburg.
• 1978: Graham Salmon set worlds record for 100 meters by a blind man.
• 1985: Betsy King wins LPGA Rail Charity Golf Classic.
