Bloemfontein - The Free State's controversial health MEC, Benny Malakoane, is facing further criminal charges after the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) laid corruption charges against him yesterday.

TAC general secretary in the Free State, Anele Yawa says the charges relate to an article in the Mail&Guardian newspaper on July 4, which stated Malakoane ordered that a dying woman’s bed at Dihlabeng regional hospital be made available to an ANC official, despite his not qualifying for admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The article stated that Malakoane, with the assistance of Free State health department head, David Motau and deputy director general, Teboho Moji ordered that the ANC official be admitted to the hosptal's ICU while patients who did qualify for admission were turned away because the ICU was at capacity.

One patient who was turned away reportedly died while waiting in the hospital's general ward.

In a separate matter last week, Malakoane appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s court on charges of fraud and corruption relating to his time as Matjhabeng municipal manager. The case was postponed until November.
