FS municipality to pay Eskom over R8 million a month | News Article

Harrismith - The Maluti-a-Phofung municipality has agreed to pay Eskom more than R8 million a month as part of an agreement to repay its debt.

Mayor Vusi Tshabala says the municipality's payment plan will end by August 2015.

The municipal council, which consists of Qwa-Qwa, Harrismith and Kestel, finalised their payment plan last week.

Tshabala says the municipality owes Eskom some R427 million.

Tshabalala says they have requested the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) to look into the electricity charges.

Eskom earlier warned that it would terminate electricity supply to three Free State municipalities, namely Maluti-a-Phofung, Dihlabeng, and Ngwathe should they not repay the debt by August 8.

After national government intervention, Eskom however agreed to gave all three municipalities until the end of August to submit payment plans.

Ngwathe comprises Parys, Koppies and Heilbron. Dihlabeng consists of Bethlehem, Clarens, Fouriesburg and Paul Roux.
