• 2003: Zimbabwean vice president, Simon Muzenda dies after a long illness.
• 2004: Nine miners die in an underground fire at the Northam Platinum mine near Thabazimbi.

• 1904: Michael Mosoue Moerane, pianist, choirmaster and composer, is born in Gumtree, Basutoland (now Lesotho). He died in Gumtree in February, 1980.
• 1904: Pieter Johannes Schoeman, SA author who is known for his sympathetic picturing of the Swazi, Zulu and San people, is born in Utrecht district, Natal.
• 1984: "Cosby Show" premieres on NBC-TV.
• 1985: Walt Disney World's 200-millionth guest.
• 2013: Grand Theft Auto becomes the fastest entertainment product to reach $1 Billion in sales.

• 1969: The SA rugby team beats Australia 19-8 in Bloemfontein.
• 1990: John Tavares, Canadian ice hockey player is born.
• 2004: Natalie du Toit, South Africa's star performer at the Athens Paralympic Games wins her second gold medal with a record victory in the 100 m freestyle.
