• 1914: Pretoria is declared a city.
• 1957: Queen Elizabeth II becomes the first Canadian monarch to open the Parliament of Canada with the Speech from the Throne.
• 1960: Peace Corps 1st suggested by JFK
• 2006: The Mail & Guardian goes to court to challenge an urgent interdict forcing it to remove from its website an SABC report into the blacklisting of certain analysts and commentators. The newspaper published the 78-page report on its website claiming the SABC has "violated" the recommendations of a commission into the charges by releasing only a misleading and "sanitised summary" of its findings in a seven-page statement.

• 1888: Albertus Daniël Keet, SA poet, is born.
• 1898: Jabulani Albert Ntuli, SA artist and illustrator of the Bantubibel in 1977, with Laduma Madela, is born in Eshowe district, Natal.
• 1951: Herman Charles Bosman (46), SA author, dies of thrombosis in Edenvale, Tvl.
• 1959: A J Pero, Staten Is, drummer (Twisted Sister-Not Gonna Take It) is born.

• 1962: Kathy Whitworth wins LPGA Thunderbird Tourney Golf Tournament.
• 1979: NHL's greatest scorer Wayne Gretzky scores his 1st NHL goal.
• 1990: Lucas Radebe, SA soccer star, scores his first goal for Kaizer Chiefs (6) in the game versus Wits University (1).
