• 2003: Mother Teresa of Calcutta is beatified by Pope John Paul II.

• 1922: Elsabé Antoinette Murray Steytler (Elsa Joubert), SA author and winner of several awards, is born in Paarl, CP.
• 1977: Two newspapers, the World and the Weekend World are banned. This day was later commemorated by journalists country-wide as national Press Day.
• 1971: Last issue of "Look" magazine is published.
• 1989: Astor Piazzolla & Wm Finn's musical "Dangerous Games" premieres in NYC.
