• 1998: Prof. Benedictus Kok (90), former rector of the University of the Orange Free State, dies in Bloemfontein.
• 1990: British Conservative Party chooses John Major to succeed Margaret Thatcher as leader ( and hence as Prime Minister).
• 1990: A consensus is reached following the fall-out between leaders of the African National Congress (ANC) and government over the continuation of talks.
• 2005: The first partial human face transplant is completed in Amiens, France.
• 2012: The Eurozone announces that it will make loans of 43.7 billion euros to Greece.

• 1820: John Thomas Baines, SA painter, traveller and writer, is born in King's Lynn, England.
• 1978: Ansuyah Ratipul Singh, medical doctor and community worker, author, pianist and amateur actress, and one of the first group of five Indian girls to matriculate in SA in 1935, dies in Durban.
• 1967: Beatles release "Magical Mystery Tour".
• 1989: George Harrison releases "Cheer Down" & "Poor Little Girl".

• 1979: 1st day-night one-day cricket international, Australia v WI at SCG.
• 1991: Undertaker beats Hulk Hogan to become new WWF champ.
• 1995: November Ntshingila, SA featherweight, wins the International Boxing Council (IBC) world champion title.
• 1998: Laurie Wilmot, former EP cricket captain, appears in the Grahamstown court on charges of rape of minors.
• 1999: The Bafana Bafana, SA soccer team, beats Sweden 1-0 in a home game.
