• 1901: Guglielmo Marconi sends the first transatlantic radio signal, from Poldhu in Cornwall to Newfoundland.
• 1913: Hebrew language officially used to teach in Palestinian schools.
• 1961: Martin Luther King Jr. & 700 demonstraters arrested in Albany Ga.
• 1983: A truck bomb explodes at US Embassy in Kuwait
• 1998: Three SA farmers from the Eastern Cape, who have crossed the border to Lesotho to search for stolen cattle, are shot and killed.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1878: Joseph Pulitzer begins publishing "St Louis Dispatch".
• 1964: Shooting starts for "Star Trek" pilot "The Cage" (Menagerie).
• 1929: Harry Stratford Caldecott (43), SA art painter, dies in Wynberg, Cape Town.
• 1986: South African journalist Zwelakhe Sisulu arrested.
• 2007: Ike Turner, American singer, former husband of Tina Turner (b. 1931) dies.
• 2004: A newspaper reports in Mbabane that Swaziland's King Mswati III has bought himself a luxury sedan worth about R3.5m while his debt-ridden country continues battling Aids and crippling poverty.

Sports:

• 1930: Baseball Rules Committee greatly revises the rule book.
• 1904: James Alexander Joseph Christy, SA cricket player in ten tests, is born in Pretoria.
• 1914: Denis Warburton Begbie, SA cricket player in five tests (1947-1950), is born in Middelburg, Eastern Transvaal.
• 1995: NBA referees return to work after striking.
• 2001: Lucas Radebe, SA born soccer star, is ruled out of the Bafana's squad for the 2002 African Nations Cup finals by a twisted ankle.
