• 1995: AIDS patient Jeff Getty recieves baboon bone marrow transplant.
• 2003: President George W. Bush announces the capture of Saddam Hussein.
• 2006: According the Safety and Security Minister , replies to a parliamentary question posed by the Democratic Alliance, that 1 128 children were murdered in South Africa the previous year.
Arts, Music, TV:
• 1964: Michael Brown meets Rene Fladen, then writes "Walk Away Rene".
• 1938: The Federation of Amateur Theatrical Societies of South Africa (FATSA) is established in Krugersdorp, with Breytie Breytenbach as first president.
• 1970: Cecilia Wessels (75), SA opera singer, dies in Cape Town.
• 2006: Convicted robber and "people's poet", appears in the Johannesburg magistrate's court for allegedly assaulting his wife. Mbuli, who has a previous court order against him for domestic violence, is granted bail of R2 000. Mbuli was found guilty in 1997 of stealing R15 000 from a bank in Pretoria. He was sentenced to thirteen years in prison. In 1999 he was convicted on another charge of armed robbery and possession of a hand grenade. He was released on parole in 2003, after having served five years of his sentence.
Sports:
• 1968: Bobby Orr scores first career hat trick (vs Chicago Blackhawks).
• 1999: Clarence Mlokoti, a founder member of Kaizer Chiefs, is shot dead by hijackers when they try to take his car.
• 1997: Diners Club Senior Golf Match.
