• 1838: In the Battle of Blood River, a Voortrekker commando of 470 men, under leadership of Andries Pretorius, is attacked at Ncome River (later called Blood River) by an army of Zulu King Dingane. About 3,000 Zulus are killed. This day was first commemorated by the Afrikaner community as Dingaan's Day and later as Day of the Covenant.
• 1908: 1st credit union in US forms (Manchester NH).
• 1920: 8.5 earthquake rocks the Gansu province in China, killing an estimated 200,000.
• 1950: US President Harry Truman proclaims state of emergency against "Communist imperialism".
• 1947: The Blood River Monument is inaugurated.

• 1913: Charlie Chaplin began his film career at Keystone for $150 a week.
• 1908: Thomas Selema Masekela, SA artist, Chief Health Inspector in Alexandra and later health inspector in Germiston and Sharpeville, is born on Madibeng farm, near Dikgale, Pietersburg district, Transvaal.
• 1975: Daniël Petrus Goosen (53), member of the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns (South African Academy of Science and Art), dies.
• 1966: Jimi Hendrix Experience releases its 1st single, "Hey Joe," in the UK.
• 1971: Don McLean's 8+ minute version of "American Pie" released.

• 1922: Mutual Association of Eastern Colored Baseball Clubs formally organizes.
• 1927: Cricket 1st-class debut of Don Bradman, NSW v South Australia.
• 1897: SA cricket player Jacobus Petrus Duminy, who played in three tests for South Africa (1927-29), is born.
• 1907: SA cricket player Syd Curnow, batsman in seven tests (1930-32), is born.
