• 1985: Opening parliament, President Botha announces that government intends giving Blacks such as those living outside their designated 'homelands' more political rights and an informal forum where Black leaders can discuss changes. Also giving Blacks living in urban areas property rights.
• 1995: King Moshoeshoe II of Lesotho regains his throne.
• 2005: The first Oscar nomination for a South African film, Yesterday, a drama about a woman in a rural village who discovers she is HIV-positive, is announced. Yesterday is the first feature-length film in the Zulu language.

• 1961: Walt Disney's "101 Dalmations" released.
• 1970: Robert Altman's M*A*S*H premieres.
• 1988: 15th American Music Award: Anita Baker, Paul Simon & Whitney Houston.
• 1993: 20th American Music Award: Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey win.
• 1998: Spice Girl Victoria Adams (Posh) and soccer player David Beckham get engaged.
Sports:
• 1924: 1st Winter Olympic games open in Chamonix, France.
• 1939: Joe Louis KOs John Henry Lewis in 1 for heavyweight boxing title.
• 1989: Michael Jordan scores his 10,000th NBA point in his 5th season.
• 1997: 71st Australian Womens Tennis: Martina Hingis beat Mary Pierce (6-2 6-2).
