• 1914: Petition by Black women against carrying of passes in the Orange Free State.
• 1926: Physicist Erwin Schrödinger publishes his theory of wave mechanics and presents what becomes known as the Schrödinger equation in quantum mechanics.
 
 
 
• 1943: WWII: SA troops to fight in Europe.
• 1999: Old Mutual announces its intention to note shares on the London stock exchange and four stock exchanges in Africa.
• 1980: Robert Mugabe returns to Rhodesia after 5 years in exile
• 1984: Michael Jackson is burned during filming for Pepsi commercial.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1918: "Tarzan of the Apes", 1st Tarzan film, premieres at Broadway Theater.
• 1948: 1st tape recorder sold.
• 1962: "Family Affair" opens at Billy Rose Theater NYC for 65 performances.
• 1956: Elvis Presley's releases the single "Heartbreak Hotel".
• 1949: Sokhaya Charles Nkosi, SA graphic artist, is born in Durban. He was employed by the SABC (1982-1986) and is since then senior tutor at the AIA (Africa Institute of Art), FUNDA, teaching drawing and painting to diploma students.
• 1977: 1st broadcast of "Roots" mini-series on ABC TV.

Sports:

• 1948: Dr Irvin Khoza (The Iron Duke) who was awarded Kick Off's accolade for the Personality of the Decade for his contribution to SA soccer is born in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.
• 1963: Sam Rice, Eppa Rixey, Elmer Flick, & John Clarkson elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.
• 1996: The Bafana Bafana, SA soccer team, wins the Africa Cup of Nations Quarterfinal versus Algeria 2-1 at the FNB Stadium, Johannesburg. Mark Fish scores his first goal in international soccer.
• 2000: The Bafana Bafana, SA soccer team, beats DR Congo 1-0.
• 2005: South Africa's Ryk Neethling beat Igor Berezutsky of Russia by 22-hundredths of a second to win the 200-metre individual medley, his third victory in two days at a short course World Cup swim meet at Olympic Stadium.
• 2013: Novak Djokovic defeats Andy Murray to wins his third consecutive men's singles title at the 2013 Australian Open.
