• 1840: The steamer Good Hope sinks off the Tsitsikamma coast.
• 1886: The first gold (61 ounces) is sent from Kromdraai in the Witwatersrand to the Standard Bank in Pretoria.
• 1964: Ghana becomes a one-party Socialist state.
• 1988: Mr Mxolisi Mswela, national organiser of the Azanian Students' Movement (AZASM) is arrested at his home and held under the Internal Security Act of 1982.
• 1991: President F.W. de Klerk and ANC deputy president Nelson Mandela share a public platform for the first time as they jointly receive the Johannesburg Press Club's Newsmaker of the Year award. Mandela calls for an interim government before negotiations, while De Klerk opposes the idea.
• 1997: Dolly the sheep, world's first cloned mamual (from an adult cell) existence announced by the Roslin Institute in Scotland.
• 1989: UK physicist Stephen Hawking calls Star Wars a "deliberate fraud".

• 1855: The last edition of James Archbell's The Natal Independent and General Advertiser is published.
• 1989: 31st Grammy Awards: Don't Worry Be Happy, Faith, Tracy Chapman.
• 1989: 1st Spanish commercial on network TV (Pepsi-Cola-CBS Grammy Award).
• 2009: Heath Ledger, posthumously, wins the Academy Award for Best Supporting Act for his performance as the Joker in "The Dark Knight".
• 2009: 81st Academy Awards - "Slumdog Millionare," Sean Penn & Kate Winslet win.

• 1998: The Bafana Bafana, SA soccer team, beats Morocco 2-1.
• 1969: Barbara Jo Rubin becomes 1st female jockey to win at a major US track
