Historical Events:

• 1910: Rockefeller Foundation: John D. Rockefeller Jr. announces his retirement from managing his businesses so that he can be devoted full time to being a philanthropist.
• 1943: Saambou (Permanente) Bouvereniging, a landmark in the economic history of the Afrikaner, is founded.
• 1991: Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) chief-of-staff Chris Hani says as long as the SADF continues recruitment and training, his organisation will continue recruiting members and building underground structures.
• 1939: In Mumbai (Bombay), Mohandas Gandhi begins to fast in protest against autocratic rule in India.
• 2004: At least fourteen children have contracted HIV in SA hospitals and researchers say it should be a 'wake-up' call for the under-staffed institutions.
• 2005: Steve Fossett becomes the first person to fly an airplane around the world solo without any stops without refueling - a journey of 40,234 km/25,000 mi completed in 67 hours and 2 minutes.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1968: Todd Tozama Matshikiza, SA musician, composer and writer, dies in Lusaka, Zambia. He composed the music and wrote some of the lyrics for the popular all-Black musical King Kong, portraying the life and death of heavyweight boxer Ezekiel Dlamini.
• 1987: UK students start a campaign to force British universities and colleges to divest up to R650m in South Africa.
• 1923: Time magazine publishes 1st issue featuring Joseph G. Cannon (Speaker of US House of Representatives).
• 1933: NYC premiere of "King Kong".
• 1956: Elvis Presley's 1st hit in Billboard's top 10: "Heartbreak Hotel".
• 1985: "My One & Only" closes at St James Theater NYC after 767 performances.

Sports:

• 1875: 1st recorded hockey game (Montreal).
• 1991: The SACP is formally launched in Natal at a rally held at Currie's Fountain Stadium in Durban.
• 1938: American Bowling Congress' largest tournament (24,765 competitors).
• 1957: Mickey Wright wins LPGA Jacksonville Golf Open.
• 1978: 1st day of Test cricket for Desmond Haynes (WI v Australia).
• 1984: Peter Ueberroth elected baseball commissioner (Effective Oct 1).
