Historical Events:

• 1896: M.T. Steyn is sworn in as president of the Orange Free State.
• 1861: Abraham Lincoln is inaugurated as 16th US President
• 1919: Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr (Frederik), who was administrator of the Transvaal at the age of 29, is appointed principal of the South African School of Mines and Technology, Johannesburg, which under him, became the University of the Witwatersrand in 1922.
• 1972: The largest single construction work undertaken in South Africa, the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam (now Gariep Dam) on the Orange River, is officially opened by State President Fouché.
• 1979: In reaction to newspaper reports, Prime Minister P.W. Botha states through the media, that he will not be 'blackmailed into a deal with anybody' and challenges Dr. Rhoodie to return to South Africa.
• 1980: ZANU-PF under Robert Mugabe wins the first free elections in Zimbabwe and Robert Mugabe becomes president.
• 1996: President Mandela visits Togo for a few hours. He and Togolese President Eyadema review the situation in West Africa.
• 2005: United Nations warns that about 90 million Africans could be infected by HIV in the future without further action against the spread of the disease.

• 1932: Grammy Award winner Miriam Makeba is born in Johannesburg.
• 1895: Jean Welz, SA painter, is born in Salzburg, Austria.
• 1939: Carel Trichardt, SA actor, is born.
• 2000: 14th Soul Train Music Awards: Prince, Whitney Houston, DMX & Mary J. Blige win.
• 1924: "Happy Birthday To You" published by Claydon Sunny.
• 1937: 9th Academy Awards - "The Great Ziegfeld", Paul Muni & Luise Rainer wins.
• 2001: IRA explode a bomb in front of the BBC Television Centre in London, injuring 11 people.

Sports:

• 1932: Jack Meckler, an athlete who won the Comrades Marathon five times, is born in Johannesburg.
• 1931: West Indies beat Australia for the 1st time, by 30 runs at SCG.
• 1939: Sandra Reynolds, the 'Grace Kelly' of SA tennis, is born in Bloemfontein.
• 1993: 1st ESPY Awards: Michael Jordan, Monica Seles win.
• 1995: George Foreman loses WBA boxing title, refusing to fight Tony Tucker.
