Historical Event:
 
• 1876: The first issue of The Cape Times appears in Cape Town.
• 1905: John Fleming (Jack) Brock, scientist, physician and professor who developed the Department of Medicine at the University of Cape Town, is born in Port Elizabeth.
• 1975: The government's final proposals for the consolidation of the 'homelands' are announced. The total number of separate homeland areas will be reduced from 113 to thirty-six.
• 1985: In the worst bus accident in SA history, a school bus with seventy-six learners of Hoërskool Vorentoe plunges into the Westdene dam, killing forty-two.
• 1985: Beyers Naudé is arrested together with Allan Boesak and over 200 others for their part in a demonstration march through the city of Cape Town. The charges are subsequently dropped.
• 1991: Fifteen mourners are killed in a gun attack on a funeral vigil, allegedly in collusion with the SAP.
• 1992: Multilateral agreement between the governments of Lesotho, South Africa and Swaziland amending the Trilateral Monetary Agreement of 5 December 1974.
• 1995: Winnie Mandela, Deputy Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, is dismissed from her post.

• 1894: Henry William Alexander Cooper (Samuel Zwaartman) (52), SA author, dies in Lisbon, Portugal.
• 1921: Peter Loubser Were Becker, author, ethnologist and advertising executive, is born at Veld View, Rivonia. He was a special friend of the Zulu Royal family and Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
• 1960: Johannes Kerkorrel (Ralph John Rabie), Afrikaans singer and songwriter, is born in Johannesburg. He died in 2002.
• Steve Jobs was adopted. His biological father was Abdulfattah Jandali, a Syrian Muslim.
• Steve Jobs was dyslexic
• Movie trailers used to play after the film.
 
Sports:
 
• 1982: The South African rugby team beats South America 50-18 in Pretoria.
• 1994:
• South Africa is readmitted to the Olympic games on condition that it complies within thirty days to terms laid down by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
• Quite fittingly, Pelé is the youngest ever World Cup winner, picking up the gold in 1958 at just 17 years and 249 days.
• Forget about Messi; if you want to find a goalscorer, look no further than Fernando Peyroteo.
