Historical Event:

• 1803: Henry Francis Fynn, pioneer and settler who was a member of an expedition to the Zulu chief Shaka in the 1820s, is born in London.
• 1886: Coca-Cola, originally developed by Dr John Pemperton as a brain tonic, is sold for the first time in Atlanta, Georgia. It became popular throughout the world, also in SA.
• 1933: Dr Stanley Mogoba, president of the Pan-Africanist Congress (PAC), is born.
• 1933: General J.B.M. Hertzog, as Prime Minister, forms a coalition government between the National party and the South African Party of General J.C. Smuts. Smuts becomes deputy prime minister.
• 1946: New constitution goes into effect in the British Gold Coast colony later Ghana becoming first British African colony with majority of Africans in legislature.
• 1947: The Royal family arrive in Pretoria during their visit to South Africa.
• 1973: The British government publishes in Trade and Industry, guidelines for British companies operating in South Africa.
• 1998: British Airways prohibits smoking on all its flights.

Arts, Music, TV and random facts:

• 1893: Louis Henri Meurant (81), pioneer of Afrikaans, dies in Riversdale.
• 1936: Eugene Marais, SA poet, naturalist, lawyer and journalist, shoots himself on the farm of Gustav Preller, near Pelindaba. Joyce: The SA family encyclopaedia).
• 1982: Henry Selby Msimang, interpreter, clerk, journalist, farm manager and especially politician, dies in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg.
• Everyone on earth is born with the ability to wiggle their ears, but if you don’t learn how early on, the muscle atrophies and you can’t learn any longer.
• The flamingo can only eat when its head is upside down.
• If you put a can of Diet Coke in water, it floats. Regular Coca-Cola sinks.
• In 1938, Time Magazine named Adolf Hitler Man of the Year.

Sports and facts:

• 1873: Beauclerk Upington, advocate, politician, yachtsman and president of the South African Football (Soccer) Association (1913-22), is born in County Cork. He arrived at the Cape when he was 1 year old.
• 60% of NBA players are bankrupt within five years of leaving the league.
• Richie Ashburn hit a foul ball that hit a fan in the stands. As they were carrying her away, he hit another one which hit her again.
• The American Sports industry is worth $422 billion a year, and more than 1% of all Americans are employed by it.
