Pretoria - An economist says it is not surprising that Eskom's power cuts have led to an increase in joblessness.

A Statistics South Africa quarterly report has revealed that 44 000 white collar jobs have been lost since the beginning of the year.
 
Load shedding and fuel costs are said to be responsible for the biggest drop in turnover since 2010, in seven of the country's eight key industries.
 
Economist Francois Stofberg says although unfortunate, nine out of ten people in the country are employed by the private sector and these private companies need electricity to keep the doors open, make profits, and so employ people.
