'Heroes' Acre should be accessible to all who fought in the struggle' | News Article

Bloemfontein - Heroes' Acre, the burial place for struggle heroes in Phahameng location in Bloemfontein, will soon undergo a make-over of one of the ANC stalwarts laid to rest there.

The South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) will erect a monumental burial site for political activist and founder member of the ANC, Thomas Mapikela.

Council chairperson at the Provincial Heritage Resources Authority, Chitja Twala, says the site's biggest challenge is its inaccessibility to those outside Bloemfontein.

He says having similar sites in all five districts in the province could be the solution.

ANC stalwarts such as Former Free State premier Winkie Direko, among others, are buried at the site. The unveiling of Mapikela’s monument is expected to take place in September this year.
