Mecca stampede: 220 dead, at least 400 injured─── 11:46 Thu, 24 Sep 2015
Mina - At least 220 pilgrims have been killed in a crush at Mina and some 400 others injured, outside the Muslim holy city of Mecca, where some two million people are performing the annual haj pilgrimage.
Saudi Arabia’s civil defence authority told Reuters the crush took place a few kilometres east of Mecca, where pilgrims stay for several days during the climax of the haj.
Photographs published on the civil defence Twitter feed shows pilgrims lying on stretchers while emergency workers in high-visibility jackets lift them into ambulances.
