Grenade attack kills two teenagers as Madagascar celebrates independence | News Article

Antananarivo - Two teenagers have lost their lives and more than 80 people have been wounded following a grenade attack that disrupted Madagascar’s independence day celebrations in the capital Antananarivo.

The attack took place late Sunday at the Mahamasina Stadium during a free concert followed an earlier military parade, as people celebrated their country’s independence from France.

"Divergences in point of view may exist between us but if the leader does not suit you, you cannot kill the population," a statement by President Hery Rajaonarimampianina broadcast on national television said.

"We will never tolerate destabilisation. Especially because this is not only destabilisation but an act of terrorism."

Another report from the BBC said the situation remained fragile in Madagascar, where supporters and opponents of the president were "at loggerheads”.

Rajaonarimampianina’s election as president in 2013 brought fresh hope following years of political instability in Madagascar.

But just 18 months into his presidency, the country’s National Assembly voted to impeach him for failing to deliver on his election pledges.

No arrests have been made in connection with the attack and no-one has claimed responsibility.
