The message delivered by newly re-elected Grain SA Chairperson Louw Steytler at the close of the organisation's 2015 Congress in Bothaville last week really drove home the reality of what it means to be a farmer.
It is an often thankless job that remains unrecognised until something - whether it be climate or circumstance - leaves the farmer unable to provide the much-needed staple produce for the nation. Then suddenly the entire world clamours about the importance of the farmer and the non-negotiable need to support the agriculture sector.
Perhaps it would be nice if more of us gave recognition to farmers even in times when the harvest looks good. As Steytler so aptly phrased it: "We are so damn proud of each and every one of you!"
