Charlie the elephant’s life as a captive will now come to an end with the help of the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI).
According to Douglas Wolhunter, Senior Inspector and Manager of the NSPCA’s Wildlife Protection Unit, they have been working with the institute for many years regarding the health and welfare of Charlie of the Pretoria Zoo.
“We have been steadfast in our objective in finding solutions that serve the best interest of Charlie, since February 2021,” he said.
He added that they were granted access to do a full physical, psychological and mental assessment on Charlie.
“We look forward to working with SANBI for him to live out the best life he can, with all the stimuli that he needs and the freedom to make the choices that he wants to make,” he added.
