The West Indies have become the first team to be crowned the ICC World Twenty20 champions twice.

The Calypso Boys needed to score 19 runs off the final over in Kolkata to deny England from claiming the honours.

England batted first, scoring 155 runs in their 20 overs with Joe Root top scoring with 54 while Jos Buttler added 36.

The Windies were in heaps of trouble in their innings after finding themselves at 11 for 3, however, an 85 by Marlon Samuels and 25 by Dwayne Bravo led the fight back.

But it was seamer Carlos Brathwaite who was the hero for the Caribbeans after four consecutive sixes of the first four balls of the final over to win the title.

Windies captain, Darren Sammy, feels with all the off-field politics in West Indies cricket it may be the last time they play as a team.

"I don't know when I'll have these guys in the dressing room," Sammy said.

"You look at the schedule, I don't see any T20 schedule for this year because of the system in the Caribbean.

"We have a tri-series and a Test series against India.

"We are not eligible for selection and so this tournament meant a lot. Not only for me but for the guys.

"We played for a cause. I really want to commend the men for the way they have put their focus on cricket. And now that the cricket is over, we can deal with all the issues we want to talk about."

India’s Virat Kohli was named as the player of the tournament for his 273 runs in five innings at a breathtaking average of 136.50.

The T20 World Cup will only be played in 2020 again with Australia playing host to the tournament.
