Van den Bergh scores big again | News Article
Nicky van den Bergh - CSA

Nicky van den Bergh and Dwaine Pretorius both were out in the 90s as the Highveld Lions ended day one of their Sunfoil Series clash against the Warriors with a slight advantage at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Right-hander Van den Bergh, who made 101 against the VKB Knights last week, fell one short of his ton this time around as he made an assured 99 (177 balls, 9 fours, 1 six) in the host’s total of 302/8. All-rounder Pretorius, out in his 80s in both innings last weekend, this time made an attacking 97 (134 balls, 8 fours, 4 sixes).

The pair shared in a vital fifth-wicket partnership of 180 – the only substantial one of the innings after the Lions won the toss and chose to bat first. The next best effort from any batsmen was the 32 made by Rassie van der Dussen.

But the day could have been far better for the home side had they not lost their set pair, along with two more wickets, for just 39 runs late in the day.

Andrew Birch was the pick of the bowlers with 3/56, while Sisanda Magala (2/60) and Simon Harmer (2/105) picked up two wickets apiece.
